Agate is one of my most favourite gemstones. It is composed of microscopic crystals of quartz in colourful layers. Agates are formed in the earth with the filling of a cavity in the rock. They are usually found as round spheres of various sizes. The layers may appear as waves, rings, eyes or plant like material. The ancients valued it as a powerful talisman. They believed them to lower high body temperatures and quiet storms. They also carved them as cameos and used these to adorn the body as well as shaping them into beautiful bowls for ceremonial use. 

 

Agate is a very tactile crystal, one you won’t be able to keep your hands off. I have a wonderful tumbled piece which has a depression in the middle just right for pressing my thumb in. This stone gives me enormous release of tension. In fact most agates make great rubbing stones.

 

Agates may have a waxy or crystalline appearance and sometimes both. They are a grounding stone which help us acquire a physical and emotional balance. They help raise our consciousness and build our self-control. Agates are like a tonic, they strengthen us and allow us to experience acceptance. Agates are also said to improve one’s natural ability and to increase confidence. It may be of use to athletes and students (especially during examinations) where they may be needing an extra burst of either mental or physical energy to reach their goal. Albite is a white or translucent stone with a faint bluish tinge to it. Moonstone is a form of Albite. Albite helps relieve tension and depression. It soothes the wearer of mental stress. It boosts the immune and respiratory system as well as strengthening the spleen and thymus. It is found in North America, UK, France, Japan and Kenya.

 

Alexandrite is a form of chrysoberyl – the chameleon of the gem world. It has the ability to change colour. In daylight is appears green and changes to red in incandescent light. Originally found in the Ural Mountains of Russia the mining there closed after a short time. Some Alexandrite is found in Brazil and Sri Lanka, although these are not of such a good quality as the Russian stones.

Amber is fossilised sap from prehistoric trees. It’s use as a gem is as old as mankind and we have been fascinated for eons by the colour, feel and mystery of the amber. In many cases, locked inside are plants or insects long ago extinct. The two main sources of amber are from the Baltic area and South America but it is also found in Mexico, Germany, Romania, Canada, Denmark, Norway and England. Amber ranges in colour from pale yellow, orange to dark brown. It can be opaque or transparent and as mentioned previously may contain plant or insect matter.

 

The Ancient Greeks called amber, elektron. Amber becomes electrically charged when rubbed on cloth and can attract small pieces of lint or paper. As a healing stone, amber draw negativity, lifts heavy burdens, balances aggressive traits, provides mental stimulations, clears depression, draws disease out of afflicted areas, stabilises the spleen, brain, lungs, thyroid and endocrine system. The lighter stones deal with the mental aspects and the darker stones with regeneration.

Ametrine is a naturally occurring blend of Amethyst and Citrine. This is caused by uneven heating of the crystals from deep within the earth’s crust. The effect is a purple Amethyst with swirls or patches of yellow citrine through it. This combination of violet and yelloo is ideal for balancing and nervousness, fear or anxiety the wearer may be experiencing. It has been used to stabilize and balance between spirituality and daily life and to help in psychic opening and development. Ametrine is also useful for working with spirit and animal guides, meditation, and astral travel.

Amethyst is a member of the quartz family. It forms in geodes as six-sided terminated crystals. Its colour can vary from the deepest purple to the softest pink to almost clear and is extensively used in jewellery. Apatite stimulates the intellect, expression, lucid dreams, spiritual love, communication, it balances, teaches, encourages past life recall, enhances psychic abilities and telepathy. It is a good stone to use for meditation, prophecy, acceptance, unconditional love and creativity. Apatite clears the charkas, strengthens bones and decreases negative thoughts. It is a sone that benefits the muscle, tissues and general motor skills. It promotes calcium absorption for the body and eases hypertension and restores clear thinking.

Aquamarine is the colour of the clearest, purest sea frozen into a gem. Aquamarine is a variety of beryl and can be clear blue, blue-green, green or golden coloured. High quality, rich coloured aqua is rare and quite costly. Aquamarine is found in India, Brazil, USA, Mexico and the USSR.

 

The colour of the stone and its vibrations stirs the unconscious and reminds us of the spirit of the sea. It allows us to recognize truth and be open to changes in consciousness. It deals with matters of the heart and past lives. It helps us become more spiritual and to radiate with a spiritual aura. It feels and looks like the whole body becomes blue-green, especially in the region of the heart when wearing aquamarine. It balances and strengthens the heart and throat charkas as well as the charka of the thymus region.

 

The Aquamarine promotes spiritual awareness and protection to the most vulnerable. It is said to help stabilise and harmonise emotions, especially grief, it calms the nerves like a calm sea. It helps to reduce our fears, increase our creativity and opens the mind to our intuition. It is a good stone to carry with us into an examination or job interview, as it will promote clear and logical thinking. A great stress reliever (again like a calm ocean) and soother. It was thought to be the protective talisman of sailors for the prevention of drowning.

 

In healing, the aquamarine is an excellent stone for sore throats, strengthening the vocal chords, clearing blocked communication, assisting with verbal communication (a great stone for public speakers), strengthening the body’s cleansing organs (liver, spleen, kidneys) as well as helping with the eyes, glands, neck area, stomach and teeth.

 

It has a great harmonising effect on all levels, emotional physical and mental. The aquamarine helps achieve clarity of vision.

 

It is generally useful in cleansing, meditation, promoting peace, inspiring prophecy, providing strength, and affinity with nature and the sea in particular, soothing, reducing fears and phobias, protecting, reduces nervousness, develops your inner self, encourages truth, is purifying, cleansing, provides spirituality, harmony, assists with relationships, grants patience and understanding, provides a broader viewpoint and protects the aura. In healing it is said to activate the thymus, reduces fluid retention, cure cough, stop toothache and reduce swollen glands.

Aquamarine balances the function of the liver and stomach. Protects the throat, jaw, nerves, eyes, neck, teeth, thymus, mind, immune system, liver, kidneys, thyroid, spleen, bones, organs, and thymus.

Aventurine is translucent green, blue or red quartz. The green variety seems to be the most popular. Aventurine has many positive qualities especially when used in conjunction with other stones for healing. When used with rose quartz it helps increase you ability to love or with malachite where it will bring emotional blocks to the forefront. It is beneficial to the nervous system, and works well as a crystal that is simply handled and carried around with you in your pocket or handbag. Aventurine is said to increase libido, increase confidence and assist during prayer or meditation. It is found in the USSR, India, Nepal and Brazil. The individual qualities of each colour of Aventurine are dealt with separately.

 

RED AVENTURINE
Promotes creativity, personal power and prosperity. It is particularly useful in the healing of internal organs. Red Aventurine is a very warming and passionate stone. It helps to increase the temperature of the skin by moving blood and creating inner heat which is particularly good for people who are always feeling cold. It is associated with the heat of the desert, especially that of Australia. It can be used to detoxify by activating the lymph glands. It tends to move bodily fluids giving as sense of being 'hot blooded'. It can bring on emotional release by bring up issues related to past life experiences. It can boost the immune system if placed over the thymus gland. It draws out negative thought forms.

 

 

BLUE AVENTURINE
A masculine, strong, hard, forceful, grounding, clarifying and nourishing stone. In healing sessions it can increase the flow through lower charkas, promote peace and tranquillity and stimulate the masculine energy. It also helps to decrease anxiety and stress.

It works with strengthening the rational, logical part of the mind by providing food for thought. It can bring up old fears and often tends to cause irritability and or headaches if worn for long periods. It is cleansing to the nervous system, especially that part which is controlled by the mind. It does not seem to be a gemstone which would be appropriate for general healing. It can be worn for short periods when focused organisational thinking is required.

 

GREEN AVENTURINE
Green Aventurine is a grounding, creative, imaginative stone that promotes prosperity, success, balance and calmness. It helps us see new alternatives, connects our heart and soul and attracts luck and money. A peaceful, soothing gemstone that has an affinity with animals and nature. .

 

It is useful for diseases of the eyes by helping with nearsightedness. A useful way to do it is to leave Aventurine in some spring water overnight and use the water to bathe the eyes or the skin. It helps with anxiety, pain and clears drugs from body. It also counteracts psychosomatic illness and alleviates skin diseases.

It helps balance the heart, emotions, thymus, nervous system, muscles and internal organs. Like all green stones it helps to strengthen the wearer's physical body by infusing organs with its colour and raising their vibratory rate. It tends to detoxify first and then supports healing.

 

Azurite and malachite are often found together as a form of copper ore. It is a copper based stone related to Malachite. In fact it can be said it is its younger sibling. Azurite is copper carbonate and contains very little water, if it absorbs water in the earth, it changes to malachite over time. It is said to be the jewel of wisdom and increases psychic ability. It revitalises the brain and will assist in releasing the past, and accepting the future. It will help you reach your subconscious and cleanse the mind of negativity. It is said to help us to communicate with others around the planet. It helps you to know your hearts desire. It can increase our knowledge of subconscious programming making positive change easier for us. It helps to balance the blood chemistry. Its properties are balance, cooperation and tuning into our communication capabilities.

 

Azurite benefits the spleen, thyroid, bones and skin. A wonderful stone to use during meditation, place it over the third eye charka to remove any blockages and to open up spiritual vision and understanding. It is a beneficial stone for those studying exams as it will open up the mind to access and retain information, placed next to you on your study desk it will assist with recall during the exam.

 

  

Beryl can be found in shades of yellow, gold, white, blue or green. It is a great teaching stone which allows us to decide what is necessary and what isn’t and making the right choice by filtering out distractions and unnecessary stimulation from outside influences. A good stone for relieving stress and calming the mind. In healing it is beneficial for all eliminating organs such as the kidneys, liver and intestinal system. It will also strengthen the circulatory system. Beryl is helpful to the eyes, throat and easing a stressed mental state. A sedative stone which also reawakens the love for couples. Found in the USA, India and USSR.

 

Different coloured beryls are named as such: green – emerald, blue – aquamarine, pink is morganite, golden – heliodor. Red Beryl is the rarest and is found in the USA. Colourless beryl is known as goshenite and is also rare.

Bloodstone is a dark green stone with red or orange specks whose mission is primarily with the physical body. There are also specimens which are mostly red or orange. Over time it teaches the wearer more about body awareness and highlights areas that need attention. It is especially good for children as it is a gentle stone. It can attract abundance, help with purification of the blood, assists with mental balance, encourages healing, attracts wealth, strength, power, protection, prevent miscarriages and assists with childbirth. It locates areas of disharmony in the physical body.   Bloodstone is a grounding crystal.   It was also known as Heliotrope by the Ancient Greeks. It is now found in India, Australia and the USA.

 

When used in healing Bloodstone promotes longevity, vitality and oxygenates the blood. It can decrease haemorrhaging, anaemia, nose bleed, leukaemia, tumours, stomachache, bowel pain, anger, bewilderment, rashes, vaginal haemorrhaging, bleeding ulcers, iron deficiency and stress. Bloodstone promotes balance by purifying the blood, liver, spleen, kidneys, energy, bone marrow, heart, testicles, ovaries, cervix, all blood vessels, menstruation, bladder, intestines and lung congestion.

 

 

Calcite comes in shades of white, grey, black, green, yellow, blue, brown or red. It is a beneficial stone for all our cleansing organs, our bones, joints and for mental clarity. It helps us remember important information and helps us retain what we have read or our aspects of our own experiences. Another good stone for students and exams. Green calcite can help change a negative situation to a positive one and it is particularly good for athletes as it aids the bones and joints against stresses during competition. Yellow calcite is an excellent stone to meditate with as it draws in the yellow ray.   It is recommended for astral projection and those people in the healing profession.

 

Carnelian can be translucent or clear and comes in a variety of reds, oranges or browns. Carnelian is symbolic of the earth and is therefore a good grounding stone. Used in meditation it can provide a connection to the past and will keep you grounded whilst meditating. This stone can boost motivation, help achieve success in your personal or career matters, protect you and promote self-interest.

 

Carnelian has healing influences on the reproductive organs and like most reddish coloured gems will help with the purification of the blood, it keeps the digestive system working properly, assists with the cleansing of the liver as well as alleviating lower back problems.    Carnelian has the reputation of stopping the flow of blood from open wounds and if worn around the neck during menstruation will help ease stomach cramps and decrease a heavy flow. It can also be used at the back of the neck to stop nosebleed. Carnelian has electro magnetic properties and is best worn in direct contact with your skin in order to get the most benefit of its energy.

Generally, Carnelian is a stone which can assist in the retrieval of earth records, past life experiences and emotional issues.   It is a warm, creative stone that can assist in our memory and our relationship with nature. harmony, courage, happiness, self esteem, rebirthing, reincarnation, strength, personal power, grounds, inner receptivity, protection, peace and eloquence. It is a stone that will help in issues of healing, jealousy, harmony, depression, self confidence, doubt and patience.   Some wearers claim that it assists in astral vision. Carnelian can ease the symptoms of colds, nightmares, sleep disorders, enhance the sense of touch and negate the effects of radiation.
